Summary: Light is the great unifier across science, currently leading to unprecedented cutting-edge, lifechanging technologies, which are revolutionising our society and well-being. The fundamental understanding and rational engineering of light–matter interactions at the nanoscale will generate new opportunities for future breakthrough technologies. Advanced photonic crystal and plasmonic structures will make it achievable the precise control of light for a plethora of technologies based on the quantum nature of photons. Optical structures with precisely designed and engineered properties will be needed for the development, implementation and on-chip integration of quantum computing systems, ultra-sensitive lab-on-a-chip sensors and analytical techniques, highly efficient energy systems and advanced medical imaging and therapies. In this talk I will introduce cutting-edge advances in plasmonic and photonic crystal platforms based on nanoporous anodic alumina – a nanoporous material produced by electrochemical oxidation of aluminium – and their application in optical sensing and biosensing, and photocatalysis for environmental remediation.
